It’s day 3 of a week-long marathon of ocarina batch reveals leading up to the 82nd New England Folk Festival in Marlborough, MA from April 24-26! This set, batch 24, consists of four soprano pendant ocarinas (SN 063-066). This set is crafted from a beautiful and rarer mix of woods, with two different keys. A summary of the woods and key for each ocarina is as follows:
SN 063 (F5): camphor burl, reclaimed curly birch, curly old growth redwood
SN 064 (F5): camphor burl, reclaimed curly birch, curly old growth redwood
SN 065 (F5): camphor burl, reclaimed curly birch, curly old growth redwood
SN 066 (F5): camphor burl, reclaimed curly birch, curly old growth redwood
Each ocarina is crafted with a rich reddish-brown camphor burl body, paired with a beautiful reclaimed curly birch top to contrast the darker body. Because of the beautifully figured wood selection, I decided to upgrade the mouthpiece to curly old growth redwood, which pairs perfectly with the figured body woods and ties together the color palate. I feel that the figure and polished color of these little pendants will make for stunning pieces in any pendant collection.
The tone of this ocarina set is characterized by a sweet and warmer tone, owed to the softer woods used for the build. The ocarinas play smoothly with a bit lower back pressure. Each pendant is carefully voiced with sweetness and clarity across the range, with a low breath curve that makes them effortless to play even at the high end, and all of these pendants are 7-hole style (6 hole plus 1 sub-hole) for a total of 18 notes.
