Begin the journey for your ultimate dream wooden inline ocarina. I pride myself in meticulous selection of fine woods from all over the world, and as long as I can source the wood and am not allergic to it (currently not working with cocobolo, camatillo, and Bolivian rosewood), I will make your ocarina in any key from bass B3 to alto A4 out of any combination of woods in the world – the sky is literally the limit! I work extremely closely with my clients every step of the way, and because the custom ocarina process is highly involved, and I want my clients to play a major part in the design of their instrument, and help make their vision a reality. Starting price for custom inline builds is $400, and throughout the process you get regular and personal build updates, design consultation, and final detailed pictures with a specialty batch unveiling video for each set. Please note that due to my current backlog of requests and regular production, wait times are around 6 months average for a custom inline build.

CUSTOM PENDANT OCARINAS

Like beautifully polished jewels that sing, these high end wooden pendant ocarinas are perfect companions for anyone looking for a quality wearable musical instrument, and with the ability to customize these pendants with virtually any wood combination in the world, can be made as a truly unique, personal item. CUSTOM WOODEN XUN

Custom wooden xun is where Bretti Musical Instruments officially started in the very first instrument sales, and although a rare instrument, is still at the core of what I make. Like with my custom ocarinas, the custom xun design process is highly involved as I work with my clients every step of the way, from initial design, to wood selection, progress updates, and delivering the final instrument. Because the xun is such a rarely requested instrument, at the current time I typically only offer xun on a custom build request basis, however on occasion I may have some xun added to the shop listing that I build and decide to release. Starting prices are as follows: Soprano ($175), Alto E/Eb ($250), Bass C/B ($350). DESCRIPTION: One of the original alto A4 ocarinas from my very first official ocarina batch, this ocarina exhibits exceptional quality tone and balance. Its timbre is rich, textured, and sweet with beautiful clarity across the entire range, and a strong tone and projection. The figured bubinga body exhibits beautiful swirling grain and color, with a lightly curly maple top to contrast. The full ocarina is also finished with a French polished shellac coating, which is different from my current body varnish and brush-coated shellac mouthpiece, making for a lighter yet organic feeling coating. This is truly an exceptional A4 model at every level.

DESCRIPTION: An exquisite alto A4 made from a unique combination of woods that uses the natural rawness of the inclusions found in the burl to highlight the natural beauty of the wood. The tone of this ocarina is absolutely stunning, equally matching the beauty of the woods. The response is just utterly smooth and effortless with incredible responsiveness. The timbre is amazingly warm, especially for a higher pitched alto A4, and is the warmest alto A4 I have ever made. The ocarina has a lower backpressure than typical altos that I make and is such an easy ocarina to play. The breath curve is gently rising, with beautifully warm lows, mellow mids, and a fluttery sweet high end that just sings. This is truly a professional grade performance wooden alto A4 that you will be able to grow into and enjoy over the years.

DESCRIPTION: One of my earliest ocarina releases and batches, and a bit of an experimental voicing when I was looking into what I called “high texture” voicing in ocarinas, as well as a bit of an unconventional key. The backpressure on this ocarina is high, leading to a more subdued low end but unusually clear and uniquely textured and rich tone going up the scale. However, due to the much tighter voicing of this instrument, strong second harmonic resonances are present on the last few notes, which can squeak very strongly if you under-blow, so this ocarina requires you to play with confidence when hitting the high notes, and requires good technique to realize its potential. Out of the three ocarinas from this batch, this particular ocarina has a more open response and more comfortable breath curve, and can be pushed harder than SN 012. While I do not make ocarinas with this style of voicing anymore, preferring a more balanced voicing approach, this unique ocarina may be good for someone looking to an ocarina with unique voicing and something to challenge themselves on.

DESCRIPTION: Part of a custom ocarina set, this utterly stunning alto G4 is an absolute masterpiece performance-class inline ocarina. The body features an exquisite selection of 10-year air-dried African blackwood, with a beautiful bit of sapwood and stabilized natural cracks that give for a very refined yet wabi-sabi feel. The clean symmetric grained zebrawood top pairs beautifully with the black heartwood and yellow sapwood of the African blackwood body. The mouthpiece features a rich earthy-red piece of curly old growth redwood from my personal reserves. This ocarina plays and sings to the absolute highest degree, and I do not think that I can voice an alto G4 ocarina any finer than this. The response is exceptional at every level, with incredible richness and clarity across the entire range. This ocarina is truly a professional, performance level woodwind.

DESCRIPTION: A beautiful tenor ocarina from a batch of three made from one of my most popular combinations of woods. The Brazilian bloodwood body exhibits a deep red hue and nice chatoyance in the light, and I have found this level of red is difficult to find. The wild grain of the zebrawood top provides a bold contrast to the red bloodwood that really stands out for a unique looking instrument. Both woods are hard and heavy, lending themselves to a nice weighted feel and exceptional polish. The tone is clear and bright, playing smoothly across the range, with warm lows, resonant mids, and effortlessly clear highs. Like most of my tenor E4 ocarinas, this ocarina exhibits a bit lower breath pressure than typical, requiring a gentle breath at the low end, and lightly rising up comfortably through the range.

Unlike my tenor E4 size, this new size has a much stronger and bolder voicing, with a low end that can be pushed harder, higher overall volume with a bit more rising breath pressure curve, yet still retaining beautiful clarity and richness across the range. The beautiful black mottle wenge top provides for a bold contrast to the rich brown sapele body for a very classic feel. The tone is warm and rich with a unique woody timbre associated with the deeper tenor size.

DESCRIPTION: This ocarina is the first ever bass C4 wooden inline model from Bretti Musical Instruments, and represents a significant milestone for these instrument developments. The tone is warm and deep, with a bit of breathiness at the low end, a richly textured mid range, and beautifully clear and easy highs. The timbre is characterized with a soft tone and deep woody richness that you would expect from a wooden bass ocarina. This particular bass C4 has a bit lower breath curve, and is a perfect addition for players who prefer lower breath ocarinas that can be comfortably played indoors and in small spaces. The breath curve is gently rising throughout the range, and the final notes are easy to play in tune without much effort, while still having good volume and projection. The hole spacing is also the same as my other tenor models, and does not require any stretch to play. And although this is a larger wooden bass ocarina, the ocarina is still very light and easy to hold, and the larger size really allows you to appreciate even more of the beauty of the woods. Please note however that the left pinky hole is on the larger size, around 12.5mm diameter, which may be a challenge to seal for players with very small hands or narrow fingers, and will take practice to get used to.

DESCRIPTION: One of two ocarinas from a custom bass C4 batch, this is yet another utterly exquisite ocarina build, and one of my finest and most figured ocarinas to date. This ocarina is made from a top-tier selection of master-grade woods – an insanely figured dark-roasted torrefied tiger maple body with incredible chatoyance and a beautiful golden hue (and probably the most figured piece of maple I have used for an ocarina yet), an intensely rippling flame maple top with a beautiful cream color, and a curly salvaged redwood mouthpiece with matching accent stripe cutting between the maple body and top. The pictures do not do justice at all to the sheer fiery movement of the figure in the wood, and I would highly recommend anyone interested in this ocarina to check out the full pictures in the gallery, as well as the close-up breakdown in the unveiling video linked below to see just how figured the woods are and how the figure moves in the light. The tone is as stunningly beautiful as the looks, with a beautifully warm resonance at the low end, soulful mids, and beautiful clear mellow highs, playing absolutely effortlessly across the range. DESCRIPTION: Part of the first ever set of bass B3 ocarinas from Bretti Musical Instruments, this is currently the largest ocarina I have built to date. This bass B3 is characterized with a soft and breathy tone, with deep lows, earthy mids, and clear highs, playing effortlessly across the range with a low-medium breath curve, and ease of the highest notes without having to push or strain at all. While taking a bit more breath than my smaller ocarinas due to the larger windway, with the low breath curve you have a lot of flexibility in the tone and control. The chatoyance of both the sapele body and eucalyptus top just shimmers in the light as you move the ocarina, and the golden-brown color palette lends itself for a very classic looking wooden ocarina with an extra bit of beauty in the grain. Despite being a large bass ocarina, this ocarina is also exceptionally light and easy to hold. This particular ocarina has a much closer finger spread typical of my smaller tenor ocarinas that is accessible to most players. Please note that because this is a larger bass ocarina, although the finger spread is accessible for most, some of the fingerholes (right thumb at 16mm diameter and left pinky at 13mm diameter) are on the larger side and may not be suitable for players with small hands or thin fingers. SOPRANO C5 WOODEN XUN

DESCRIPTION: A beautiful little wooden soprano xun made from a piece of iridescent reddish-orange padauk in the smallest size I currently make. The grain shimmers in the light with bands of grain running vertically through the body, and a bit of an inclusion on the back towards the top which gives for a bit extra personality. The timbre of the xun is bright and sweet, with a beautiful bird-like tone. Once you get the technique down for the small soprano xun (which requires the tightest embouchure of all the xun I make), the xun will sing effortlessly though the range. Because tiny soprano xun of this size are the most sensitive to angle and breath in terms of pitch, this small instrument can deliver a great deal of expressiveness once you master its control.

ALTO Eb4 WOODEN XUN

DESCRIPTION: A unique alto Eb4 xun made from a beatutiful piece of marblewood. Marblewood is a bit rarer wood, with a beautiful yellowish color and grain rays that almost looks like bamboo, cut with dark brown veining that gives the appearance of streaked marble. Marblewood is incredibly hard and dense, taking an absolutely beautiful polish, and lends itself to a very bright timbre with crisp overtones. This xun is characterized with a clean, bottle-like tone and brightness. And the marblewood makes for a stunning collection piece.
