I am excited to unveil a look at the newest batch of high end wooden inline ocarinas from Bretti Musical Instruments for the month of October this year! This batch is also a bit exciting in that it is my first ever set of tenor Eb4 inline ocarinas, and as of this unveiling, the deepest key released yet as I continue to work my way down to even deeper extended range bass inlines. This set consists of two ocarinas, S/N 040 and 041, made from a beautiful selection of iridescent ribbon stripe sapele for the body, a rich and dark wenge top, and my classic aromatic cedar mouthpiece. The ribbon stripe sapele features a beautiful chatoyance to it in the light, with the figure running lengthwise along the grain of the body that moves like strips of satin, further accenting the beautiful rich brown of the wood. The wenge top is one of my favorite woods for use on ocarinas, typically as an accent layer, however the bold and dark mottled grain is also beautiful enough to showcase on its own as a main wood, and provides a striking contrast to the lighter body.
Originally, I had planned this set to be my first bass D4 set, however during the voicing process I found that the breath curve was a bit too low for the given size, so I decided to revoice the set a semitone higher to Eb4, which ended up working out perfectly. While my tenor E4 ocarinas are very soft breath, the Eb4 set has turned out to be a stronger, more bold voicing that can be pushed a bit harder on the low end, while still retaining clarity at the high end, with more volume and projection. A perfect set for those who like the richness of a wooden tenor that want a bit stronger response in the voicing.
